Dental prosthetics is a manipulation that allows restoring lost teeth using dental con structions (dentures). Simply put, these are removable teeth.
Dental prostheses are divided into two categories: removable and non-removable. And there is also another group—partially removable prosthesis, or combined prosthesis. It includes elements of both removable and non-removable prostheses.
A partial removable prosthesis is used in cases where a significant number of teeth are lost, making it physically impossible to install a non-removable prosthesis (dental bridge): the absence of supporting teeth in the area of loss, which could anchor a dental bridge, does not allow for it due to the bone (its volume and quality) or financial aspects, as the cost of a combined dental prosthesis will be cheaper than a non-removable one.
There are several types of modern removable dental prostheses:
- complete denture (full dental prosthesis);
- partial denture;
- clasp prosthesis
A complete dentureis suitable for you if you have completely lost your entire set of teeth. It consists of a base part (can be made of nylon, plastic, or metal-plastic) and teeth that are located on top of it.
Such a prosthesis is fixed by suction. It completely reproduces the relief of the gum, so the removable dental prosthesis can be said to 'suction' to it. Also, over time, when the fixation begins to weaken, a denture adhesive cream may be needed.
A partial dentureis designed for those who still have some of their teeth left. It has metal clasps (hooks) that rest on the natural teeth.
Bar-retained denture is arguably one of the most comfortable, when it comes to removable dentures. A bar-retained denture consists of two parts of the denture that are connected by a thin metal bar, which fits closely to the mucosa. Bar-retained dental dentures are very comfortable in everyday wear, despite looking quite bulky, they take up much less space.
Partial removable dentures (combined)
In some cases, for example, when the lateral teeth are missing but the front ones are present, it is possible to install a partial denture, but make it partially non-removable. This is done as follows: the adjacent teeth are trimmed and a bridge is placed, connecting the re maining teeth into a strong structure, which has additional special attachments—attachments . As a result, the removable denture lacks hooks, improving its aesthetic appearance.
