A crown is a non-removable prosthesis that is installed in place of a destroyed or missing tooth. If at least part of the tooth is preserved, it is restored, and a crown is attached to it.
When there is no tooth unit, there are two options. The prosthesis is attached to the adjacent teeth or installed on an artificial root, previously implanted into the bone.
What types of crowns are there
Dental prostheses can be temporary or permanent.
Permanent crowns
Metal-ceramic
A metal-ceramic prosthesis consists of 2 parts–metal inside, ceramic on top. The crown looks more aesthetic than a metallic one, but due to the transparency of the ceramic, the base is visible. Another downside–due to constant contact with metal, the gums often acquire a bluish color.
Ceramic
Products made of solid ceramic are twice as strong as metal-ceramic. The material has the same transparency as enamel, which allows achieving a natural color of teeth. Ceramic is hypoallergenic, so it does not cause rejection by the periodontium, does not change the color of the gums. Another plus–to install a ceramic crown, there is no need to significantly grind down the support tooth.
Zirconium
Zirconia prostheses are more durable than ceramics, hence they are recommended for athletes engaged in contact sports. The products are hypoallergenic, lightweight, and do not require significant grinding of the supporting tooth. The downside is that in terms of aesthetics, zirconium is inferior to ceramics due to its low transparency. Nevertheless, the prosthesis still looks natural and beautiful.
